What age should we start lessons?
Generally speaking, we recommend that fencers are at least 10 years old. By this age, they respond well to both group and private instruction. Also, keep in mind that it is never to late to learn this exciting sport and the Brand Club offers Adult Beginner lessons.
How do we join the Brand Club and School of Fencing?
Call and make an appointment to see the Brand Club. After taking a look, you or your child are welcome to come fence twice, free of charge, before making a commitment to join.
What does the membership cover?
Your membership allows you to participate in open fencing and take group or private lessons at the Brand Club. Private lessons and group classes are optional and those fees are extra. We are open 7 days a week and you will interact with both the best coaches in New England as well as many nationally ranked fencers on our fencing floor.
How do we pick a coach?
All the coaches at the Brand Club are well educated instructors who are accomplished atheletes and gifted mentors. We recommend you begin with group lessons until you or your fencer decide on a coach. Once you have selected a coach, you may ask for a trial private lesson before making a commitment to that particular coach.
How much are group and private lessons?
Contact the individual coaches for their individual fees.
How do we try a lesson?
Group lessons are offered on a rolling admission basis and can be arranged through the Director and likewise cancelled through the Director. Private lessons should be arranged directly with individual coaches and cancelled with directly with the coaches.
Do we need to be a member in order to take lessons at the Brand Club?
Yes, membership is required after your second visit to the Brand Club. The only exception is for adults who are taking the introductory Adult Beginner lessons.
Can we pay a floor fee and fence at the Brand Club?
No, in the interest of safety, we reserve the fencing rooms for the exclusive use of our members.
How do we pick a weapon?
The Brand Club begins fencers with any of the three weapons (Sabre, Epee or Foil). Our coaches will make a point to get to know you, your fencer's likes/dislikes and can help guide your decision.
What about equipment?
The Brand Club has equipment to loan fencers for their first few visits. After your first few visits, including group lessons and private lessons, if you decide to pursue the sport, our coaches can help guide you with the purchase of appropriate equipment.
